Sanseverino family

This family of Neapolitan nobles descends from a Norman soldier who accompanied Tancred de Hauteville when he conquered Sicily in 1060. Turgisio (born 1031, son of a Norman landowner named Crispin d'Arnes) was named Lord of Sanseverino and Count of Rota by Tancred; his wife's name is unknown but she was probably Norman too. He settled at Sanseverino in Calabria, and his son Ruggiero married Sirca, daughter of Pandolfo, prince of Salerno by his wife Theodora of Spoleto (both descendants of Charlemagne; the Spoleto family had already produced three popes). Ruggiero's son Roberto (died 1164) Lord of Serino, Solofra and Montoro, married Sarracena; their descendants eventually died out in the male line. Roberto's brother Enrico is recorded as Lord of Sanseverino, Montoro, and Count of Rota in 1125; he married Finizia, and had a son named Guglielmo, Lord of Sanseverino, who married Isabella, daughter of Silvestro, Conte di Marsico (thus bringing the Marsico name into the family; the Marsicos were a cadet branch of the house of Hauteville).

Certosa di Padula - the St. Lawrence Carthusian Monastry - is one of the most impressive buildings of all the Southern Italy. It was founded by Tommaso Sanseverino in 1306 on the site of an existing coenoby. It is dedicated to St. Lawrence, and its architectural structure recalls the grate upon which the saint was burnt alive.
