Conte d'Aquino

The family d'Aquino is of Lombard origin and was probably related to the Lombard princes of Capua. The initial ancestry may have started with: Rodoaldo, a Lombard nobleman who was the first Gastaldo (governer) of the city of Aquino. Following a local war in 882, he was captured with his son, and was forced into the monastic habit after having renounced his feuds. The next name to appear in the family is: Adenolfo (+ after 883), Gastaldo d’Aquino, who may have been Rodoaldo's son or brother. His son may have been: Rodiperto (+ after 924), Gastaldo di Aquino who married Magalù, daughter of Docibile dei Duchi di Gaeta (b. ante 906 + bef. 924) Siconolfo I may have been their son.

Thomas Aquinas was born in or around 1225 at his father Count Landulf's castle of Roccasecca in the kingdom of Naples. Today, this castle is in the Province of Frosinone, in the Regione Lazio. Through his mother, Theodora Countess of Theate, Aquinas was related to the Hohenstaufen dynasty of Holy Roman emperors. Landulf's brother Sinibald was abbot of the original Benedictine monastery at Monte Cassino. The family intended for Aquinas to follow his uncle into that position. This would have been a normal career path for a younger son of southern Italian nobility.
