| The Counts of Champagne and BloisIn 940, the county of Blois was controlled by Thibaut I the Old, who founded the hereditary house of
Blois. From 987, upon the establishment of the Capetian monarchy, the Counts of Blois were immediate
vassals to the king. Because of the power held by the house of Blois, they were also at times considered
to be dangerous rivals to the king. The successors of Thibaut I the Old enlarged their domain, sometimes
at the expense of the Capetian monarchy, but territories were acquired and divided again and again among
various descendants until Thibaut le Grand reunited Blois with Champagne in 1125. Thibaut’s rule of his vast territories began with the reunification of Blois with Champagne in 1125.
Thibauts’ father, Etienne de Blois, ruled the lands of Blois until his death in 1102. During this same
time, Etienne’s younger brother, Hugh, held the county of Troyes and the adjacent areas of Bar-sur-Aube
and Vitry. These areas held by Hugh would have remained separate had Hugh not transferred them to
Thibaut le Grand, his nephew, in 1125. .....
