The Earls of Ormonde

The word "butler" derives from the "bouteillier", meaning "cup bearer", or from "bouteille", meaning "bottle". In 1177 Theobald le Botiller FitzWalter accompanied King Henry II into Ireland, and was appointed hereditary Chief Butler of Ireland. This title can be defined as Governor by today's standards. He was granted land holdings of Baggotrath, in Co. Dublin, and the Stein River lands around what is now Trinity College, Dublin.

In 1328 James Butler, a son of Edmund Butler, was created Earl of Ormonde. One reason for his elevation being the fact that his wife Eleanor, a daughter of Humfrey Bohun, earl of Hereford, was a granddaughter of King Edward I.
