Dial family

Nancy Amanda Dial's great-grandfather was Hastings Dial, who served as a Colonel in the British Army during the Revolutionary War. In 1767, he was given a large tract of land in Laurens County, South Carolina, by King George III. His brother Martin Dial was one of the few soldiers who escaped the "Cane Brake Massacre". Facing execution by the British, Martin's life was spared due to the intervention of his brother Hastings Dial.

Hastings was born in England, where the Dial (Dyal) ancesters are from. The family tree has been traced back all the way to Roger d'Oyly, who lived in Oxford in the 12th century. It is assumed that Roger's father came over from Normandy with William the Conqueror.

One of Hastings' and Rebecca Abercrombie's grandsons was Isaac Malcolm Dial, Jr., who moved with his family from South Carolina to Texas in 1851, including his daughter Nancy Vernon (Nan), who was a widow by that time.
