Coker family

The Coker family immigrated from England to Virginia in 1618, and the father (John Coker) served twice in the Virginia House of Burgesses. Descendants and relatives lived in Virginia, Indiana, Kentucky, Texas, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina and elsewhere.

The ancestors of the various branches of the Coker family in America all came from England. Many have arrived in the first years of settlement of Virginia from about 1618 to the latter part of that century; one or two others landed in Massachusetts during the same period. The Cokers in England all derive from a single place and one family, the Norman "de Mandeville" family who came into England with William the Conqueror in 1066.

Coker in England was not originally a family name, but was the name of a district in the southern part Somersetshire. Batten describes Coker a "a large tract of land adjoining Yeovill on the South and about 3,400 acres in extent." It is in Southern Sommerset. ...... continue
