Day 15

We left Sombrio Beach at 8:20 am, rounded Sombrio Point, and kept a keen eye out for breakers as we made our way down the coast in the morning fog. We passed Magdalena Point, San Simeon Point, and 2 1/2 hours later approached the River Jordan, just as the sun and blue skies broke through. 17 miles into the day we stopped for lunch at a sunny little beach, cooked up some lunch to energize, had a hot spiced cider, and lounged on a warm rock before hitting the water at 2 pm. We passed the Sheringham Point lighthouse, then surfed the northwest wind waves across Orveas Bay to a river inlet where we hoped to filter water. We paddled up the river but we're stopped by a fallen tree and could not find a fresh water source. We continued down the coast and soon came across a waterfront homeowner who was kind enough to fill our containers.

[View across the Straight]
We could just see the Olympic Mountains across the Straight of Juan de Fuca. Somewhere below Mt. Angeles was my home, only a "short" paddle across.

We crossed Sooke Bay and Sooke Inlet, rounded Possession Point, and paddled up to a very small but beautiful beach; our final camp site of the trip. It was a 31-mile day and we had now paddled 340 miles in fifteen days.

Later that evening I snapped a self-portrait of Al and myself as we listened to the weather forecast and looked out towards the Olympic Peninsula and the good old USA!
