King Malcolm III |
House of Dunkeld
The House of Dunkeld or Canmore was a dynasty of Scottish kings that ruled Scotland from 1058 to
1290. The Dunkelds came to power after the two centuries of civil unrest under the House of Alpin. The
first king of this new dynasty was Malcolm II of Scotland who determined that succession would be to
the eldest son, not according to the rules of tanistry (from Gaelic tana, lordship, a custom among
various Celtic tribes, by which the king or chief of the clan was chosen from among the heads of the
septs and elected by them in full assembly). This political decision reduced the conflicts inside
the Royal family. The Dunkelds consolidated Scotlands' union and independence as a kingdom, despite
several skirmishes with the neighbouring England.
Duncan I was a son of Crinan or Cronan, lay abott of Dunkeld, and became king of the Scots in
succession to his maternal grandfather Malcolm II, in 1034, having previously as rex Cumbrorum
ruled in Strathclyde. Duncan does appear to have been a weak ruler. He is chiefly known through his
connection with Macbeth, which has been immortalized by Shakespeare. The feud between these two
princes originated probably in a dispute over the succession to the throne; its details, however,
are obscure, and the only fact which can be ascertained with any certainty is that Duncan was slain
by Macbeth in 1040. ....
