Fulkerson FamilyThe Fulkerson family's ancestors were among the first settlers in New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island around 1626, when it was purchased by the Dutch West India Company from the local natives for 60 Dutch guilders, (which some have calculated to equal $24). The company paid farmers and tradesmen to come work in and for the colony. By 1630, the population numbered about 270. Dirck Volckertszen and Christine Vigne were among the first settlers. Several other immigrants in New Amsterdam were called "De Noorman" and were documented as immigrating from Norway. Family legend has it that he came to New Amsterdam from Bergen, Norway. His circle of acquaintances in New Amsterdam is yet another indication of his origins. The great majority of Dirck's personal and business dealings in the 1650s and 1660s were with Scandinavians. ... more The life of Dirck Volckertszen De Noorman |
