My heart sank as I sat in the
oversized leather chair in my broker’s office. I cringed in utter
disgust as my eyes wandered up the dimly lit yellowed walls and came upon
a small framed sign that read, “We’ll take good care of your
money.” I had invested my life savings into an Asian mutual fund
the year prior, and I was now being informed that it had taken a sixty
percent hit. Anger, confusion, frustration…these were just a few
of the feelings scampering down my spine as a realized that my years of
fiscal discipline did little to reward me. Was the man sitting across
from me a malevolent swindler, presenting me with fallacious figures so
that I would walk out broke and he would go home rich? A veteran investor
would know better than to make these assumptions, knowing that markets
understandably crash. However, being only ten years old, I had a difficult
time being rational. Eventually, I accepted my fate and liquidated my
portfolio so I could reinvest it in another area. Determined to turn a
profit, I took what was left of my cash and invested it in Starbucks.
Now, seven years later, its value has quadrupled, allowing me a glimpse
of both the rewards and perils of investing in the market. Over the years, I have continued to invest in the stock market, building a strong diversified portfolio. A large portion of that portfolio is invested in a stock club that I have been treasurer of for over five years. The Odd Lot Investment Club contains ten members and is currently valued at just over $200,000. Many find it astonishing that such a young teen could have so much knowledge about investing and the discipline to invest. However, what may be more surprising is that a large majority of this investment money comes from a small business I own. When I was just nine years old, I opened up a small candy kiosk in the foyer of my parent’s restaurant. I was enthralled with the idea of operating my own business. Having grown up with parents that own a restaurant, I have been privileged with an inside view of all the aspects of business and management. To this day, I still run my small candy business and my passion for entrepreneurship has done nothing but grow. I look forward to entering the realm of entrepreneurialism in higher education. I am excited about taking business and finance classes, but at the same time, I have a passion to explore the liberal arts. I feel a good entrepreneur needs to be well rounded with development in many areas, business being just one. I already consider myself pretty well rounded, with passions in everything from music, to sports, to traveling. I spend a lot of my time playing piano, usually picking out some Beatle tune I haven’t heard in a while, or pounding in goals on whatever soccer team I’m playing on, all while maintaining the high academic standard I hold for myself. I also enjoy the exotic thrill that traveling expels. Having been to places like Mexico and Europe, I consider myself extremely privileged to have graced around the globe, acquiring a global awareness that many are not fortunate enough to receive. I can hardly wait to experience the tremendous personal growth that will occur while I’m attending college and the fun I’ll have mingling with new intellectuals as I slowly become part of the educated elite. |

"I've been doing this snazz since way back." My senior year, I was the leading scorer and team captain for Sequim High School's Varsity Soccer team. I set a Sequim High School record for most goals scored in a season of all time! I scored 18 goals and also led our team to the play-offs. When I score a radical goal I like to dance and bring forth a Polynesian fertility chant that goes a little something like this: Chant |
