HIGHLIGHTS OF W. VIRGINIA

TOP       I have eliminated the thumbnail photos. Just scroll down the page. This is as large as they get.

We stayed 4 days in West Virginia. I was most impressed with the scenery. Where ever we went we found hills covered with trees and streams. Our campground was located in the city of Beckley, which used to be a thriving mining town. Now it's a thriving city.

As we traveled the area we stopped in Babcock State Park where we found this old grist mill.

In this area we looked for places to fish. The guys finally decided to try out the New River. They fished and we sat in lawn chairs, read and enjoyed the scenery. All stops were very picturesque.

This entire area is called the New River Gorge
National River.

We took the opportunity to investigate a deserted 1900's boomtown called Thurman. On our map this town was called a "historic district." It was at the end of a short, winding road and was a source for some great pictures.

The New River is not new, it is at least 65 million years old. The river is known for its excellent fishing and whitewater rafting.

The bridge was started in 1974 and took 3 years to complete. It is the world's longest single arch span bridge.  Before it was built, the road wound down one side of the gorge, crossed a low bridge and then continued up the other side taking at least 40 minutes. Today it is definitely a timesaver and a beautiful sight.

Next stop, Virginia.
