In 771 the Omayyad Emirate occupied most of the Iberian Peninsula. The Kingdom of Galicia was created originally by Suebi invaders in 411. Later it was occupied by the Moors, then became part of Charlamagne's empire. In 711 it was an independent kingdom. |

By 888 three small kingdoms appeared along the Pyrennies Mountains: Navarre, Aragon and Barcelona. Galicia got renamed León, it's area expanded by capturing some of the lands occupied by the Moors. |

In 1030 the area of Navarre under the rule of King Sancho III 'the Great' was significanlty larger; it absorbed Aragon and part of León. Barcelona was ruled by Count Berenguer Ramon 'el Cuervo' |

By 1071 León had split into two kingdons: Galicia and León. Navarre was also divided into two countries: Castile and Navarre. King Alfonso VI "the Brave" ruled Castile. King Sancho I ruled both Navarre and Aragón, which was back on the map again. |

In 1130 King Alfonso VII ruled Castile and Leon as a single country. Portugal appears for the first time as a county of Castile and Leon, but in 1139 it becomes an independent country under the rule of King Afonso I 'the Conqueror'. Aragon absorbed Navarre under King Ramiro II. |
