I started downriver and slalom racing and soon I was among the top competitors in Canada. In 1964 I was invited to

an international race on the Arkansas River in Colorado. This was the infamous "Cottonwood rapids", where I almost
capsized and lost my paddle, but continued with my spare paddle to finish in second place in the downriver race.
