Robert Morton
Robert was six years old when his parents were separated and he began to be
passed to one foster home to another.
When he finally became old enough in his own mind he discovered that he
had to have a birth certificate in order to get into the Marines.
Since he did not have one he worked out a deal with his landlady, who
agreed to sign for him acting as his mother. In return Robert agreed to sign
over his $10,000 GI insurance to her. Robert
volunteered for the Raiders and was accepted as a member of
the 2nd Marine Raiders and was placed in G company. He
participated in the Bouganville operation. During that operation he was shot in
the jaw and his lower jaw was broken in three places. They had to wire his jaw
shut and according to Robert, that was the longest that they were able to keep him
quite. The worse six weeks of his life. After
his recuperation he rejoined his unit and participated in Guam and Okinawa
operations. Robert
did not get his fill of the Marine life when the war ended so he reenlisted and
became a Drill Instructor at Parris Island. After that tour of duty was
completed he was assigned to the recruiting where he had to take a different
slant on life and start being nice to the recruits and explain nicely why it was
to their advantage to become part of the Marines. I
received Roberts picture while working on this directory and could hardly
believe I was looking at a 70 plus year old marine. To me after looking in a
mirror he looked more like a 55 year old. He swears that I am mistaken and he
attributes his good looks to the fact that he works out hard and has a secret
formula based on a Zinc compound that keeps him young. Robert
has been married to his wife Virginia for over 46 years and has two sons and a
daughter. He didnt say anything about grand children. I
have corresponded several times with Robert and feel that he is a person that I
would like to know better, (John
Ferguson) P.S.
Robert in the
past has done a lot of
flying but they clipped his wings and started him in on high blood pressure
medication, I can relate to that since I also was grounded for the same reason.
