Eperjessy family

[Eperjesy gravestone] The oldest reference to the Eperjesi name is in Dezső Csánki's "Historical geography of Hungary": The alispán of Szepes megye was András Eperjesi in 1434. He must have been of noble descent in order to be appointed as an alispán. The next references are from some documents in the Hungarian National Archives: István Eperyesi was a kanonok in Szepes megye between 1443 and 1463. Then, in 1494 lived a Jordán Epperiesi, whose son Péter was a közjegyző in Szepes megye. The name of Kristóf Eperjessy is mentioned by Elek Fényes in his "Hungarian geographical Dictionary" in reference to an inheritence in 1535.

Since Szepes megye is adjacent to Sáros megye, where the town of Eperjes was located, it is likely that they were all the descendents of the same original ancester, who first aquired the Eperjessy name. Unfortunately, none of the Eperjessy family trees published in the genealogy sources goes back far enough to include any of the above mentioned ancesters.

Béla Kempelen provides two Eperjessy family trees in "The noble families of Hungary", one for György Eperjessy from Bánócz (a small town about 50 km SE of Eperjes) and another one for István Eperjessy in Veszprém megye, whose name appears in the list of confirmed nobility in 1666. The famlily tree shows our great-grandfather Sándor among his descendents.

[Eperjesy coat-of-arms] Church records in the town of Pápa contain several Eperjessy baptisms and marriages. The oldest entry is for 25 Feb 1708, when Imre's daughter Katalin was baptized in the Catholic church. It would be interesting to know how long the Eperjessy family lived in Pápa prior to 1708, because this town had a very turbulent history between 1650 and 1705, and the inhabitants must have suffered a great deal.
