The Frangepáns, Counts of Veglia and ModrusThe Frangepán family has played an important role in Croatian and Hungarian history. (Croatia was part of the Kingdom of Hungary between 1102 and 1918.) The first documented ancestor was Doimo, Count of Veglia, who lived in the 12th century, around 1130 to 1160. The island of Veglia was one of the largest Dalmatian islands in the North-Eastern part of the Adriatic Sea. Dalmatia had a rather turbulent history, it never existed as an independent country, and usually was under the influence of either Venice, or the Bizantine Empire, or Croatia and Hungary. Doimo, who was a descendent of the Italian Frangipane family, came into possession of Veglia when it was under Venetian control. In 1241 Hungary was invaded by a Mongolian army, sent by Genghis Khan in an attempt to conquer Europe. The Hungarian King, Béla IV, whose army was defeated at Mohi, fled from the battle scene and was pursued by the Mongolian troops all the way to the Adriatic coast, where he finally found refuge on the island of Veglia under the protection of the Fragepáns, Doimo's grandsons: Frigyes (Frederico), Jerindo and Bertalan. When King Béla IV regained control of Hungary, he rewarded the Frangepán brothers with extensive land donations on the mainland, including the port city of Zengg. .... next FRANGIPANE FAMILY OF ROME Map of Veglia and north Adriatic Coast |
