la Zouche family

The first recognised vicomte de Porhoët was Guethenoc, formerly of Guilliers, Moribihan, Brittany. He married Allarum of Guilliers, daughter of Benedict Comte de Cornouaïlle, and in about 1008 he moved to La Trinite, in Porhoët. There he built Castle Josselin, which he named for his son, Josselin. It is still owned by the descendents of Porhoët and is the longest continuously held private estate in the world.

The third vicomte de Porhoët was Josselin's son Eudes, who married Emma de Léon. Their son was Vicomte Geoffroy de Porhoët who married Hadvise of Brittany. They had two sons, Eudes II, who became Vicomte de Porhoët and his younger brother Alain. Eudes II married Bertha, the daughter of Duke Conan III the Duke of Brittany. Conan died without an heir, and his son-in-law, Eudes II de Porhoet claimed rights to the duchy against opposition from King Henry II Plantagenet, who wished to promote a relative Duke of Brittany. In 1168 King Henry II captured Josselin after a bloody battle, and destroyed it to break Eudes II's resistance. Eudes II was forced to flee, and the Porhoet family recognised Henry II as King. Young Alain de Porhoët also left Brittany and established himself in England in 1172 as Alan la Zouche. .... more

The original castle was built early in the 11th century by Guethenoc, who gave it the name of his son Josselin.
