Tracy family

The Tracy's are descendents of both Anglo-Saxon and Norman kings. Ethelred's daughter Godgifu married Drogo, Count of Mantes and the Vexin in Normandie, and their son Ralph de Sudeley was the progenitor of the Tracy family in England. His grandson, John de Sudeley married Grace de Tracy, the great-granddaughter of William the Conqueror. Their son, Sir William de Sudeley - who assumed the name Tracy in the reign of Henry II - was one of the four knights who murdered Thomas Becket at Canterbury in 1170. He is said to have struck the first blow. A curse is supposed to have hung over the family to the effect that the lineage would cease - which, in effect, it did, in the late 18th Century.

.... more
