Harington family

Osulf of Flemingby steps into the daylight of history in a grant of land made to the Priory of Carlisle, eighty years after Magnus Barelegs perished in Ireland. Iona had long lost the contest with Rome. The Normans controlled England, and an English Pope had recently bestowed on them the overlordship of Ireland also. The canter of the new dynamic society lay in the south, and the story of Osulf's descendants is of their move to that center.

It would be foolish to speculate whether Osulf was in origin Celtic or Norse or Saxon. Intermarriage was general between these races. His name is that of a Northumbrian king, murdered four hundred years before, and the surname of his descendants became established in the time of his son. Robert son of Osulf was a benefactor of the Priory of St Bee's. The Register of the Priory preserves a grant that he made with the advice of his wife Christiana, by which he gave a church and two hides of land in Hafrinctuna to the Priory. Robertus de Hafrinctuna, he is styled in the grant: so the descendants of Osulf have been called ever since. And the church at Harrington on the coast of Cumberland remains, though it was rebuilt in 1905. .... more
