Cornwallis familyThe earliest identifiable member of this family, William appears in London, and is known to have been a merchant. He owned property in the London parish of Stebenheath (now Stepney), and was dwelling in the parish of All Hallows Stanyng when he made his will at Stepney 26 Sep 1354, in which he directed that his rents be sold and that the money be applied for masses for the souls of the testator and Alice, his wife, and appointed his kinsman, John Tyntagel, as guardian of his son Thomas. His son Thomas was a member of the Vintner's Company in 1359. A resident of the parish of St. Botolph-without-Aldgate, he was a prominent citizen, merchant and vintner of London. He was Alderman from the Vintry, 1376, 1379, 1381, 1383, and 1384, and Sheriff of London in 1378. He also served as Burgess of London in Parliament in 1380.
