Yandell familyThe first Yandell who came to America was probably Thomas Yandle, whose name is mentioned in "The Early Settlers of Maryland" as being one of the signatories of a 1651 document. (The Yandell name has been spelled in many different ways, such as Yandel, Yandol, Yandul, Yandall, Yandle, etc.) This book reveals that Thomas Yandle was a settler in Maryland, but migrated to Virginia in 1653 and that his passage was provided for by William Clayborne, the Treasurer of Virginia. Unfortunately, very little is known about the origin of this family. There are various theories mentioned is Velma Yarbrough's book "The Early Yandells of North Carolina and Some Of Their Descendents". The name Yandell may have been derived from the German name "Jandl", but, according to Yarbrough, "both tradition and the majority of available records consistently contradict that premise and favor Irish, English, Welsh, or even Norwegian origin. There are records of Yandall/Yandell families in LDS Genealogical Library, who lived in England and in Ireland in the 17th and 18th centuries. When these records are coupled with the prevailing family traditions about their origins, it strongly suggest that the early Yandells in America had their ancestral roots in the British Isles. ....... continue |
