St. Arnaud familyJean Bertrand was born between 1630 and 1640 in Normandie, Region of Pays d'Ouche, Perche, France. He was married to Marie Nees between 1658 and 1660 in Verneuil-sur Avre, Parish of Sainte-Madeleine. Jean Bertrand and Marie Nee(s) had at least one another child, named Jean. Being named after the father one can assume that he was the first born. I can find no records of Jean at this point other than he left property to his brother Paul Jean in his will. Paul was assumed dead in New France during the settlement of Jean's estate in Verneuil-sur-Avre. Eventually Paul Jean gave up his claim to his brothers estate because of the cost of lawyer fees and comissions of go-betweens envolved in settlement and travel between Canada and France. It was becoming an exercise of diminishing returns and Paul left it to the decisions made by his brother's daughter who eventually had to sell the bulk of her fathers estate for taxes (and again lawyers) by selling it to an order of nuns in Verneuil. What it does bring to light is that Paul had a brother and the brother a daughter who may have continued the Bertrand family in France. ....... more | Sainte-Madeleine church in Verneuil-sur Avre, where Jean Bertrand and Marie Nees were married |
