Somerby family

The surname Somerby is great antiquity and is a place name in England. The village of Somerby is in Lincolnshire, and the name is frequent in the early records, at the time of the first use of surnames in England. In the church at Somerby, near Grantham in Lincolnshire, there is a marble effigy of Sir Thomas de Somerby, representing a cross-legged knight lying upon his back under a canopy, in a niche in the wall. It is considered remarkable on account of the fact that the knight's feet are resting upon a horse saddled and held by a kneeling esquire.

In 1639 Anthony Somerby was the representative of the family and graduated at Clare Hall in Cambridge. He sailed in the ship "Jonathan" to Boston and settled in Newbury.
