Balmer family

The Balmer family originated in England. George Balmer was born in a little town called Hesket-in-Forest in 1761. He married Dorothy Smith and had seven children, three girls and for boys, between 1792 and 1810. From Hesket, Cumberland, the family moved to Appleby, Westmoreland, where their son George, our ancestor, was born in 1803. At age 22 George married 19-years-old Sarah Gill, who bore him thirteen children. They lived in Skirwith, Cumberland until 1838, then moved to Newcastle upon Tyne in Northumberland. In 1851 their address was 364 Scotswood Road, Elswick, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England. After their last child Frances was born in 1852, George and Sarah, with eight of their children, Jane, George, John, William, Thomas, Joseph, Dorothy and Frances, emigrated to Canada.

After a very rough crossing in the ship ("Mayflower" in family notes), the Balmers were finally shipwrecked in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. All their possessions were lost except the little horse-hide trunk, which contained, among other things, George's Cremona violin dated 1672 ....... more
