Die Herren von Liechtenstein-Murau

Aribo was the margrave comes terminalis, "frontier count" of the March of Pannonia, from 871 until his death. In his day, the march orientalis corresponded to a front along the Danube from the Traungau to the Szombathely and Raba rivers and including the Vienna basin.

Ulrich von Liechtenstein, Minnesinger and high steward (governor) of Styria, was born in the year 1200 into the Murau line of his family. From early childhood, he received the traditional education of a knight. After serving for several years as the page of a noble lady, he became the squire of Margrave Heinrich of Istria from 1215 to 1219. Finally, he was knighted by Leopold VI in 1223. But Ulrich von Liechtenstein was also a writer. In 1255 he completed his novel „Frauendienst“, which was partly autobiographical and partly fictional. The father of a large family was also a keen student of the mediaeval poet Walther von der Vogelweide – and so his novel „Frauendienst“ contains 58 Minne-songs. ... .... more
