HISTORY OF THE ERICKSON COURT REBUILDING PROJECT
On February 10, 2005, the
Peninsula Tennis Club met at the home of Rosemary Moorhead, past President, and
discussed the club's top priorities for tennis facilities. The consensus
from the group was that our top priority was to rebuild the Erickson Park courts
into 4 tournament quality courts. The club felt that the central location of
those courts would bring increased visibility for tennis and do much to
increase tennis participation. (This meeting was prompted in part by the
mention in a PDN article of the potential use of the "derelict" tennis courts in
Erickson Park as additional pool parking.) Minutes from that meeting are
available here.
On February 24th,
2005, a committee
from PTC met with City of PA, Public Works Director Glenn Cutler to discuss our
desires for the Erickson Park Courts. Minutes
here.
In March, 2005, the new USTA
President, Franklin Johnson, announced the funding of tennis courts in public
parks was the USTA's #1 priority to grow the game. Maximum USTA funding grants
increased from $2500 to 20% of total project cost up to $100,000 for rebuilding
courts. The Peninsula Tennis Club immediately submitted a preliminary
application for a Facility Funding grant from the USTA, and began writing up
project proposals. In phone conversations with court construction experts, cost
to rebuild the 5 courts into 4 tournament-quality courts was estimated at
$110,000. Because the city budget allocation process was already in motion for
2006, we planned to work toward city fund allocation in 2006 for 2007
construction.
On November 11, 2005, the PTC board met to discuss business issues.
They decided to recommend to club members at the December meeting that PTC give
$20,000 to the city for the Erickson Court Project, provided the courts were
rebuilt to PTC's recommendations.
Meeting minutes here.
At the December 3, 2005
dinner meeting, PTC club members voted to commit to $20,000 in funding for the
courts. Meeting minutes here.
In early February, 2006, PTC
brought Bob Lundgren of Atlas Track & Tennis in Oregon up to look at the courts,
and provide project specifications for the rebuilding project. Atlas
submitted an estimate of $157,000 to fill the existing court area with rock to
correct the court slope, and to build 4 new courts over the top.
In spring 2006, the Peninsula
Tennis Club began asking members for pledges for the court construction project,
and collected $10,000 in pledged donations.
On June 19th, 2006, the City Council voted to adopt the
proposed budget for 2007, which included $100K for Erickson Court refurbishment.
In July 2006, PTC received a
Cardinall Court Improvement grant of $5000 from the PNW section of the USTA. The
PTC board also voted to increase our commitment by $600 to $20,600. That
gave us 80% secured funding of the $157,000 project, and allowed us to apply for the 20% USTA grant.
In late August, the PTC and
City of PA jointly submitted our grant application for $31,400 from the USTA
Facility Funding program.
On October 13, 2006, PTC was
notified that City of Port Angeles would receive a $31,400 grant from the USTA!
On October 21, 2006, The
Peninsula Tennis Club was presented with the President's Award from the
PNW USTA for the Erickson Court project for "excellence in promoting the game".
By December 31, 2006, PTC will
turn over $20,600 to the City of PA to meet our funding obligation. Please
help us by donating to this worthy project!
The contract for construction will be awarded early 2007,
and construction will begin as soon as weather permits - generally March in our
region.
Grand Opening planned for JUNE 2007.
