Mountain View Cattle Company

Our Deaf White Cats:  We have had 6 deaf white cats.  We also had one calico - Mina - who was hard of hearing.  Angel, Mango, Raga and Prince have passed away.  The 2 deaf cats in the house are: Bruiser and Cassie.  Prince had blue eyes, as did Angel and Mango.  Cassi and Bruiser have gold eyes. Raja had one blue eye and one gold eye, and was deaf on the blue side. Almost all white cats with blue eyes are deaf. Some deaf cats are other colors like Mina (now deceased), but most are white.

We rescued Angel and Prince in 2000, but in different cities.  Cassi came along 4 years later (2004). We adopted Raja in February 2005.  Bruiser we adopted in 2007.  Mango came to us in 2012 from Los Angeles, as a result of this website. All have  been strictly house cats for safety. Deaf cats are helpless against cars, dogs, coyotes, etc.  Deaf cats need TLC.   All of our white cats, including Fluffe , Precious  and Snow who are white but not deaf, are sensitive to bright light and rarely sit in the sun - only when it's cold! Their pink skin is sensitive to the sun, so being house cats behind high quality window glass is much safer for them.  Otherwise, they would be prone to skin cancers and sunburn. We find that all of our white cats are less "robust" than our other cats.  Caring for them and earning their trust takes more time, but is very rewarding.

Our deaf cats all learn hand signals. Because they can't hear you talking to them, deaf cats need lots of patience, repetition, petting and treats - that's how they know you care.  Deaf cats do tend to be nervous since people and other animals "sneak" up on them.  Some hissing and spitting at other cats is natural when they are surprised. We recently lost our big orange cat Spider who "mothered" them.  He was a big help.  During his last year, he raised another orange tabby, Oscar, and Oscar in turn has raised Ranger.  Oscar and Ranger have followed in Uncle Spidey's footsteps and take good care of the other cats.  We find it interesting that every orange male cat we have had shares this same loving disposition (for other cats, dogs, and people!).
