Port Angeles High School P.E. Team and individual Sports

Class Statement of Philosophy:

This is a class where students need to be committed to exercising daily in various activities.  In order to obtain fitness, active participation is critical.  While participating in both team and individual sports we will continually focus on the five components of health-related fitness; cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and body composition.

Class Description:

Students will participate in a variety of team sports including, but not limited to, floor hockey, ultimate football, basketball, mat-ball, soccer, and lacrosse.  Students will also participate in individual sports, such as tennis, badminton, and pickleball.

Students will also have the opportunity to use the high school weight room once a week and are expected to participate in various aerobic activities at least once a week, such as jogging.  Lifelong fitness activities, such as yoga and pilates, will also be introduced to students.

Grading:

At the beginning of each trimester students are given 100 points each.

Points are then deducted throughout the trimester for the following:

Non-suits (-5 + referred to office)      Absence (-5)                            Tardies (-2)

Non-participation (-1 to -5)                 Horseplay (-5)                         Referral (-10)

If you have an excused absence (cleared by a purple slip) the points can be made up by completing a P.E. report along with a fitness make-up day (30 minutes of exercise with a note signed by a parent).  A maximum of 6 make-ups are allowed.  A combination of 10 absences and/or non-suits can result in failure.

P.E. Attire (“dressing down”):

Students are REQUIRED to dress down into P.E. uniforms daily for activities.  You will not be excused from dressing down because of athletic and/or school related events, losing gym clothes, and/or illness.  If you are too sick to participate you should not be at school.  Please refer to the PAHS PE uniform policy (on back).  If a student is dressed inappropriately, it is considered a non-suit.  If the teacher comes into the gym to find a student not dressed down the student will be referred to the office for defiance (refusal to participate in PE) since uniforms can be borrowed from PE staff.  Hats and sunglasses are only allowed during the tennis unit.

No gum, food, or drinks are allowed in the gym, weight room, or outside courts.  Backpacks, CD players, etc. are also not allowed in the gym areas.  Racquet equipment is provided by the P.E. department.  However, students may bring their own racquets.

End of Class:

Students need to help put away equipment before dismissal.  Students must wait in the gym area (above the stairs/grass just outside the gym) until the bell rings or a Referral will be given.

Lockers:

You are required to lock up you belongings in your assigned lockers.  The large lockers are only to be used during the class period.  Items can be left overnight in the small lockers.  We are not responsible for lost or stolen items.  If you leave your stuff out during class, it will be collected by teachers.  Upon return you will lose points in class (this is because of extra security issues the teachers have to not have to deal with).
